If a child has not been used to hearing No, then of course there will be a reaction. Things that have taken a long time to go wrong cannot usually be fixed in an instant. It takes time, and in this case a significant amount of gentle explanation and encouragement. Being able to hear No is no less empowering than being able to say it. It seems that the parent will learn No themselves as they teach it to the child.

Can you comment on how to handle a strong negative reaction to 'No' from an 8 year old? I would like to offer more than platitudes to her. Single mum. Son always been demanding...(like dad) he still does not accept her authority. Violently reacting to mother's restrictions.
